Agra, the city near Delhi is the proud owner of the one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the Taj Mahal. This is a great masterpiece of excellent architectural grandeur and sheer magnificent construction.

Situated around 200 km from New Delhi, this was under the great Mughals who reigned over the northern part of India. The Mughals, who had descended from the Mongols and the Turks, were patrons of art and architecture and the Taj Mahal was built during the reign of one such erstwhile Mughal emperor – Shah Jahan.

Shah Jahan was fifth in the line of Mughal emperors and held great respect for his wife Mumtaz Mehal. He got this monument built in memory of his wife who died while they were on their way to Behrampur for a campaign. They had 14 children and the Emperor got this built as this was the only way he could express his feelings for his wife. This was one of the many desires she had expressed while he was alive. Today the monument stands tall as testimony to many of the love tales in India.

The construction of this lovely structure started in the year 1631 and got completed in around 22 years. More than 20,000 people worked on this and the entire structure was designed by the architect from Iran Istad Usa. The structure has a certain glow to it that is unmistakable and is rightly one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

There are five elements here in the monument – The main gateway or the Darwaza, the garden or the Bageecha, the mosque or the Masjid, the rest house or the Naqqar khana and the Taj Mahal mausoleum or the Rauza.

Any tourist would get enthralled by the lovely combination of black and white on the floor giving it a chessboard effect. There are four minarets at the corners of the majestic structure. There is a gigantic dome in the centre and the whole of Taj Mahal has the pietra dura kind of artwork. This has motifs of plants and flowers, and many geometric elements that is so typical of an Iranian kind of architecture.

If at all there is some anomaly then it is the uneven object of the chest of the emperor which was built at a later date. The white marble shines in the background and the whole monument looks magical with its myriad hues and colours. In fact this is what the monument is famous for across the world. The fact that it can change colours.

A tour to Taj Mahal would take you around the beautiful place and also in and around the city. You can see the Agra Fort, and the other related feats of architecture here.
