Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in God’s own country Kerala, Idukki is a place which is full of natural beauty and green surroundings. Idukki is home to the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary which spreads over an area of around 77 square kilometres in the taluks of the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola of the district of Idukki. At a height of around 450 to 748 m above the sea level, the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary has a great forest land between the Rivers Periyar and Cheruthoni. With the scenic background it has and the pristine ambience it exudes, the Idukki sanctuary is like a canopy of verdant expanse on a heavenly land. The deciduous and the evergreen forests dominate the area and the total experience here is exotic, ecstatic and adventurous.

Boat rides along the sanctuary are a great excitement for the tourist who comes here searching for the best and the most memorable experiences. Wild animals that are found here are the bison, the wild dogs, the elephants, wild boar and the jungle cats. You can also see the viper, cobra, kraits, and many poisonous varieties of kraits too. The birds that are found here are the Malabar grey hornbill, the grey jungle fowl, the bulbuls, the flycatchers etc. In fact, the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is very much similar to the Thekkady wildlife sanctuary with the similar varieties of animals inhabiting the region. The sanctuary is situated very near the Idukki Arch Dam.  Around 58 km from Kochi, the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary has the Kottayam and Changanassery stations as the nearest rail heads. Madurai in Tamil Nadu and the Cochin International Airport nearby are the airports which are found nearby.

Idukki Arch Dam
This is today one of the most important tourist destinations of Kerala and was declared a sanctuary in the year 1976. Spreading over an area of around 77 square kilometres, the Idukki sanctuary is situated between the Cheruthoni River and the River Periyar. The background of the Vanjur Meedu forms a great ambience and the scenic beauty here is further enhanced by the presence of a virgin atmosphere.

The rich flora and fauna here has beautiful semi evergreen forests, evergreen forests, wet deciduous forests and beautiful grasslands. The fauna here also include the laughing thrush, woodpecker, the mynah, the peafowl besides the common kingfisher. The heavy rainfall here combines to make a great natural wonder and the marvelous Idukki Arch dam constitutes a great sight. The dam at a height of around 167.68 meters is the fourteenth largest arch dam in the continent of Asia.
