Sydney is an important international tourist destination. Tourism in Sydney forms an essential part of the city’s economy. There are some interesting places to visit in Sydney. The most famous tourist sights are the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Sydney has accounted for 22.6 million domestic and 2.7 million international tourists (as per the year ending 2009)!

Apart from these there are places like the Royal Botanical Gardens, Luna Park, the beaches, and the Sydney Tower.

Sydney Opera House is an epitome of one of the most distinctive and well known 20th century buildings. It is also known as one of the most famous performing arts venue in the world. It is situated on the Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour and equally close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The building and its nearby surroundings form an iconic Australian image. The Sydney 2000 Olympics began at the Opera House! Great musical and dramas are performed at the Sydney Opera House and it also trademarks as an international piece of wonder!

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is on the main crossing of the Sydney Harbour which carries rail, vehicular and pedestrian traffic between Sydney Central Business District and the North Shore. The Sydney Opera House with the dramatic water vista of the bridge marks an iconic image of both Sydney and Australia.

The shores of the Sydney Harbour are a home to a number of historic forts and bunkers. They form to be a part of the Sydney Harbour Defence System, which was designed to withstand a seaborne attack! The forts were constructed of large sandstone blocks and consist of many tunnels, underground rooms, and catacombs.

Watsons Bay is on the end of the South Head peninsula and it provides an amazing view across the harbour to the city of Sydney and the Harbour Bridge. It is an excellent sheltered bay and anchorage on its western side of Port Jackson, from where it has derived its name.

The Rocks is a suburb, an inner city in Sydney, which is a great tourist place. This is also a very famous place for people who are visiting Sydney. There are themed and historic pubs in the area and is a great place to be in! The Rock Market operates each weekend with almost 100 stalls, and there are a number of Souvenir and Crafts shop. When you visit the place, you are instantly reminded of the movie, The Rock!

The Sydney Tower is on of  the tallest free standing structure in Sydney and the second tallest building in Australia. It is also ranked as the second tallest observation tower in the Southern Hemisphere. Also famous in the same area, is the Sydney Tower Skywalk or just the Skywalk. It is an open air, glass floored platform which circles the Sydney Tower at a height 260m above ground level. The Blue Mountains can be seen at a distance from the Skywalk!

Other than these places, there are many tourist destinations in Sydney that you must visit. The King’s Cross, Darling Harbour, New South Wales, Tumbalong Park, Australian National Maritime Museum, Star City Casino, Sydney Aquarium, and the Wildlife World.
