BR Hills Wildlife Sanctuary Travel Guide

Located in the Kemmannagudi area in the state of Karnataka in India, the BR Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a perfect amalgamation of wildlife and travel resorts. The BR Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a great connecting bond between the Western and the Eastern Ghats of India. With the river Cauvery traversing the zone, the Kollegal region sees the river taking a turn towards the northern direction and then returning to its original course. This blend of the Male Mahadeshwar ranges and the Biligiri Rangaswamy ranges is what makes it a link between the two majestic Indian ghats.

Hosting the best kind of wildlife, the sanctuary is filled with a plethora of flora and fauna. With Gaurs, tigers, panthers, bears, sambhar, elephants and chital dominating the areas, the place also has some 200 species of birds making it a perfect wildlife habitat. The crested eagle and the racket tailed drongo are the main attractions of the avifauna here.

This sanctuary is open perennially to tourists but the ideal time to visit this place would be from June to October. This is the time when all the animals come out in search of water so the chances of your spotting them are more. But if you want to avoid the heat, and feel more comfortable in travel then obviously winter or early summer is a pleasant time to be here. But prior to your trip you should also remember to take the permission of the Forest Department located at Chamarajanagar.

While here you could also visit the Biligiangaswamy temple and the neraby city of Bangalore. The BR Hills sanctuary lies around 230 kms from Bangalore and 90 km from Mysore. It is in a fascinating position between the two mighty rivers river Cauvery and River Kapila.

With the high altitude grass lands dominating the place, the forests of evergreen trees and the jungles of occasional scrub vegetation comprise the natural flora of the place. Also the great chapaka trees are famous here as being the worship of the Soliga tribes.
